It is with great pride that we have launched our first ever electronic-only newsletter. We are extremely excited about the potential this shift presents, and we hope you enjoy the ease of use and readability that this new format has to offer.

This edition features details about CPF's newest contest Français pour mon succès, the 2010 Call for Nominations, 2010 summer camp listings, and an opinion editorial by CPF President David Brennick titled "Taking Pride in 40 Years of Canada’s Linguistic Duality", among many other poignant articles.

BILINGUAL CAREER FAIR

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn how proficiency in French adds value to a wide range of careers, from Architecture through Nursing to Veterinarian!  A career fair/conference especially for French immersion students in grades 4 to 12 and their parents will be held in Calgary on Saturday, March 13th.  Open to families from throughout the province.  Registration deadline is March 8th.  Go to What’s new at www.cpfalta.ab.ca – and please let other families know about this event!

STUDENTS CAN WIN A TRIP TO FRANCE

The 2010 Allons en France contest offers grade 11-12 students and their teachers the opportunity to win 10-day, all inclusive trips to France.  Go to What’s new at www.cpfalta.ab.ca.

LOOKING FOR A FRENCH PRE- OR PLAYSCHOOL?

Look under Learning French in Alberta at www.cpfalta.ab.ca for a list of preschools and playschools that include at least some French activities and which accept non-Francophone students.

If you know of another that should be listed, please forward the information to jgibson@cpfalta.ab.ca.

LOOKING AHEAD TO SUMMER?

With the coming of warmer weather, parents and students are starting to look ahead to those lazy, hazy, crazy days….   Did you know that there’s a wide range of residential camps available in Canada, the United States and abroad designed to help children improve their French?  To find the links, choose the For students section at www.cpfalta.ab.ca and click on “Activities & resources.”

Looking for something for a younger student, or closer to home?  Each year CPF Alberta publishes, exclusively for our members, a list of summer day camps and other activities taking place throughout our province.  Because this information is often not available until late spring, it is included in the summer edition of the CPF Alberta News.  Keep your membership current and watch for that edition to arrive in your mailbox in late May.

GET STUCK ON “SAYINGS”

Among the challenges of understanding or using another language are all those sayings, like “call a spade a spade” or “au pied levé.” Canada’s Language Portal now offers translations of common expressions, the latest terminology in nearly all fields, writing tools, and much more. For the link, go to What’s new at www.cpfalta.ab.ca.

From the Language Portal’s “1000 images on the tip of my tongue”:

“appeler un chat un chat”  and  “at the drop of a hat”

ENJOY FRENCH THROUGH SPORTS

French immersion students with an aptitude for soccer, badminton or basketball are invited to participate in Les jeux francophones de l’Alberta 2010. For more information go to What’s new at www.cpfalta.ab.ca
